CULTURAL TOURS Each year the Society has a Cultural Tour and in recent years the destination has tended to alternate between somewhere in the UK and a trip to Europe. Our organisers always try to build a programme, linked in some way to the lecture programme,that will interest a wide variety of people and on occasions have also arranged to have a resident art historian with the group. Agents are used to book hotels, travel arrangements and local guides and over the years they have come to understand the style and character of our intrepid travellers. UK destinations are reached by coach with not just comfort stops but visits to places of interest on route. Here are just a few to whet the appetite: Dumfries House, The Garden of Cosmic Speculation, Blackwell in Windermere, Keddleston Hall and Waltham Abbey. Recent tours include St. Petersburg in its tercentenary year, Cardiff including a guided tour of the castle with the curator, Berlin and Dresden with a trip to Potsdam thrown in, Glasgow but not just Rennie Mackintosh, Istanbul including a boat trip up the Bosphorus, East Anglia where we learned about Flushwork and Pargetting, Antwerp with a trip to the European Fine Art Fair, The Hague for Dutch art, palaces and Delft pottery and York including a visit to the glass studio where they are renovating the great east window of York Minster.
